vasquez rocks sunset

Los Angeles evening rush hour traffic put my daughter and I just seconds past the sun’s setting over the iconic rock outcroppings that have made Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park so popular for shooting scenes television shows like Star Trek and movies like The Flintstones and Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.

We ran from the car up the trail to a path overlooking the rocks and could see the sun disappearing over the horizon as we ran, laughing. As we stood lamenting the timing, we noticed the clouds behind us were about to capture the sun’s last colors and ran back down the trail to the car in an attempt to get to the other side of the rocks in time for a good shot. We missed the peak of that color as well and were left with just these remnants of the brilliant colors the sun was throwing against the clouds. It’s not the photo I was hoping for, but it was a great adventure with my 11-year-old daughter. 🙂
