There is the hope of rain in Santa Clarita today. So the clouds were thick this morning. I didn’t expect the sun to bring any color, but I poked my head out the door at 6:30am and got a bit of a surprise. I could see the red beginning to spread across the sky. I walked back into the house to make sure the kids were progressing toward an on time school departure and asked my wife, in the hospital bed in the living room, if it would be ok if I quickly tried to capture the glorious sunrise that was about to happen. She always says yes. And it always makes me smile.

As I drove, the sky was the kind of saturated red that makes people say, “that had to have been edited in Photoshop.” It was still that red when I hit the peak of one hill and decided to try to make it to another spot to get the shot. As I got out of the car and began to run toward the trail, the red had already begun to disappear. And by the time I got to the spot at 6:44am, all that was left is what you see above.

Seconds later, it was just the remnant of pink above and by 6:45am… it was all gone. I waited for a bit, hoping the sun would pop through and bring another batch of colors to the clouds. It never did. And I’m still grateful. Timing is everything.
