When we travel with our family, we don’t stay in hotels. We shop at local markets. We cook. We walk. We allow ourselves to feel a bit lost. We want to be travelers, not tourists.

“A traveler enters the world into which he travels, but a tourist brings his own world with him and never sees the one he’s in.”

Thomas H. Cook, The Crime of Julian Wells

That said, on our 2nd day in Santiago, we did tourist things and we enjoyed them. We were taken by our Chilean hosts (Thank you, Mahaluf family!), to two places I’d recommend you see if you get the opportunity to visit Santiago. First, we visited Teleferico Santiago, the Santiago Cable Car located at the Metropolitan Park of San Cristóbal Hill. It transports you to the top of Cerro San Cristóbal, the second highest peak in the city limits of Santiago for a spectacular view of the immense Chilean Capital.

From there we walked to Fuente Alemana for a Lomito. This restaurant was featured on Anthony Bourdain and is a city landmark. The lomito is basically a sandwich with various forms of meat, tomato, avocado, and a stupid amount of mayo. At Fuente Alemana it’s good. Really good.

If you’re up for a tourist day in Santiago… I’d recommend both places. 🙂
