I arrived in Iceland just before 6 AM after a red-eye flight from Newark International Airport. It was pitch black dark, more like midnight than early morning. My room was ready when I arrived and I had planned to take a short nap and get up for the sunrise at 10:03 AM. I slept right through it. It snowed all day, which left me thinking there would be no sun when sunrise came around.

At 3:45 PM I started walking toward Nauthólsvík Beach to see what might transpire. When I shoot sunsets and sunrises at home, I leave the camera on the entire time. The color of the Southern California sunsets come and go quickly. You have to be ready when the moment happens. Not here. Before I knew it, the battery warning on my camera was flashing and there was still 30 minutes before the official sunset.

The sun sat on the horizon for more than an hour, casting a yellow-orange glow against the dark clouds. Scenes that would have passed in seconds in Santa Clarita lasted minutes here in Reykjavík. Look at the position of the sun in this photo. This shot was taken 20 minutes before sunset. I could get used to this. 🙂 [ location ]
