I don’t know if what I’m about to say is a fact, but I believe the Lincoln Memorial is the most popular memorial in Washington, D.C.,  by far. I’ve visited our nation’s capital more times than I can accurately count and on each visit, Lincoln is the most crowded of the memorials. As I visited this time, in an election year like none I’ve ever witnessed, I wonder where the Lincolns have gone.

I wonder if Lincoln would still have been the Lincoln we revere if Twitter and Facebook and 24/7 media coverage were around when he was running for his first term as leader of these United States of America. We’re all flawed, so he was most certainly flawed. But away from the ability to be unduly swayed by populist ideas, flawed men can govern in ways they probably can’t today.

I wonder… would Lincoln still be the popular one?
