Haymond Elementary School

I spend most of my time photographing the majesty of nature. It’s what I gravitate to. Today, my Uncle Wendel asked if I wanted to come take some photos inside the elementary school that my Mammaw, his mother, spent many years in working as the principal. I couldn’t resist.

This is another side of nature. If you just let nature take its course, nature will eventually take back over anything man has built. And it has certainly taken it’s toll on Haymond Elementary School.

Walking the hallways with my Uncles and cousin was a joy. My memory of this place in its prime is comprised of a single day spent there while visiting from Ohio. My cousin, John, spent five years attending this school. My Uncle spent 8 years here. I believe all of my Uncles had their mother as a teacher/principal for some period of time. It was nice to hear their stories. Their memories felt a bit like ghosts as we walked the decaying hallways.

My Uncle Wendel now owns the building. It’s going to take a great deal of work and imagination to slow down nature’s encroachment and bring this place back to something useful again. My bet is going to be firmly placed on my Uncle.
