California High School Pole Vault Record

Yesterday I had the joy of watching my Freshman son run the 400M leg for Saugus High School in the Open DMR (Distance Medley Relay) at the 51st Arcadia Invitational at Arcadia High. It’s a world-class event and it was special. It was also special to be able to watch some of the best track & field athletes from all over the United States and a few from other parts of the world. There were national best times set during the meet and as illustrated above, a new state record in the pole vault.

Senior Sondre Guttormsen of Davis Senior High School set a new California state pole vault record with a clearance of 18-2.50. He broke the 1985 record of 18-2 set by San Marcos’ Brandon Richards. It was also the 5th best pole vault performance ever by a high school athlete. The photo you see above is a combination of multiple photos. I do this, typically, for my children’s friends at track meets. I layer the images in Adobe Photoshop and hand edit each layer to get what I think is the best effect of the motion through the event. I then give a large version of the images to their parents. It brings me joy.

In this case, I don’t know Sondre Guttormsen. I do intend to find someone who does so he can have this photo, however. I don’t think that will be too hard. 🙂
