It’s hard to describe how much satisfaction I get from making these photo composites of track and field athletes in motion. It’s a combination of factors. First, I love the process. I’ve been using Photoshop since it was in its original beta and it’s one of my favorite applications. I do each of these motion composites manually by layering the shots and removing parts of the individual layers. I find it incredibly relaxing. Second, there is a joy in actually “making” something. I love taking photos, don’t get me wrong, but I think I love taking them because then I get to edit them. These composites are just a different kind of photo editing. And finally, there is a great deal of satisfaction that is derived from the joy the athletes, their parents, and their coaches share with me after seeing them. This is not a thankless job. They truly appreciate these images. So I’m going to keep making them. 🙂
