Warsaw Times-Union Sports

I have no memory of taking this photo for the Warsaw Times-Union. It was over 37 years ago. I know I took it — it says so right there in print — but until yesterday when I pulled a large envelope of clippings from a box in the garage, I could only remember taking photographs at high school basketball games and wrestling matches.

One of the jobs I had while in college was as a sportswriter for the local newspaper. In the beginning, they sent me to Friday night football games and basketball games as just the writer. Then, out of the blue one week, they handed me a camera and asked me to both write and take photos. This was 1983, so of course, it was a film camera. I had no idea what I was doing. But I loved it.

In my senior year of college, I was the writer/photographer chosen to cover the famous Indiana State High School basketball championship weekend in Indianapolis. I sat on the floor. It was Steve Alford’s Senior year in High School. I remember that weekend like it was yesterday.

But I have no memory at all of this day at a high school track meet. I wish I did. I love taking photos at track meets now. It’s, in fact, one of my favorite photo activities. And while I have no memory of it specifically, I’m so happy this relic exists. It brought a massive smile to my face. And to my track-loving kids’ faces as well.
