Apple ProRAW Sunset

The ability to default to Apple ProRAW will usher in a new era of iPhone photography for me. Two days ago, I posted about Searching For The Perfect Travel Camera, where I lamented the “feel” of the Sony RX100 VII. Encouraged by my Aunt Jane’s comment about Steve Shaluta posting photos from his iPhone, I decided to give the new iPhone 16 Pro a shot. I’m officially impressed.

One of the key features that sold me on buying it was the ability to default to saving natively from the camera app in Apple’s ProRAW imaged format. This delivers a high-quality DNG file with all of the color captured by the iPhone in an uncompressed format. This means there is a wider dynamic range to work with in post-production, should you want to do so. I most certainly want to do such a thing. Though I’ve probably pushed the boundaries a little far on this one. 🙂

Of course, this format has been available since the iPhone 12, but the quality never impressed me. However, the new 48-megapixel sensor on the iPhone 16 has changed my opinion. I purchased it today and as fate would have it, I was gifted with a gorgeous sunset to test. The image above is actually five images stitched together in Adobe Lightroom. The resulting output is 11025 × 4654 pixels. The one displayed here is exported for web display at 3840 × 1621 pixels.

My search for a decent shove-it-in-my-pocket travel camera is officially over.
