When I decided to head out to shoot this Castaic Lake sunset, I had a tough decision to make. I thought it would be an epic sunset, so it was tempting to slap a lens on the Sony A1 and know I’d get a great capture. I didn’t. Instead, I just walked out of the house with my new iPhone 16 Pro in hand so I could get another challenging test in prior to an upcoming trip. I was a little disappointed, honestly, but only because I’m a bit of a pixel peeper, and I know what’s possible with the 50.1MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS™ CMOS sensor in the A1.
I’m okay with how this Castaic Lake sunset turned out, but my disappointment is with the detail in the panoramas captured at 2x. After I finished processing the photos, I read a bit more about the 28mm and 32mm fusion lens options on the iPhone 16 Pro, and now I wish I had turned that feature on for this test. These two “extra” lenses use the 48-megapixel sensor but “fuses” pixels to produce a 24-megapixel image. I used the 2x lens to create the panorama below, which produces only a 12-megapixel image. I’ve now turned that Fusion lens feature on and will have to do a few more tests to see how it performs. And while I have a bit of regret with last night’s decision… I’ve still found my travel camera.
