The hawk’s nest at Birmingham High School was huge. Of course, I didn’t notice it until I realized the hawk I had seen earlier was now carrying nest-building materials. So imagine my surprise when it flew over my head and into a nest in one of the stadium lights above my head.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t distracted by it the entire CIF Los Angeles City Finals track meet. I kept pointing the camera up at the nest, hoping to get a glimpse of one of the three baby hawks I was told were there. I followed it to a pine tree where it sat on a limb, doing nothing for most of the meet. Then, at the close of the meet while my camera was at my side, I glanced up at the nest and saw one of the babies. The moment was so brief. I couldn’t have gotten the camera on, up, and focused in time to get the shot. It was beautiful, but you’ll need to take my word for it. 🙂
