You can learn a great deal about an athlete by watching what they do before and after they compete. I was taken with Vashti Cunningham‘s confident stare at a high jump bar set well above her head. In the top photo, she concentrates just prior to her successful clearance of 1.97 meters. She did the same thing prior to each attempt at 2.0 meters.

I was equally impressed with her response after this clear. She walked off the high jump mat with a shy grin, then a look of satisfaction. And then, with quiet confidence, she went into her routine to approach the next height.

Her personal record of 1.99 meters was attacked at Saturday’s Mt. Sac Relays. The photo below shows just how close she came, but it was not to be. Watching and photographing her efforts was one of the highlights of my day.
