This tough little flower is known by the common name “California buckwheat.” It is a shrub that is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, where it grows on the brushy slopes and in chaparral and dry washes in a variety of habitats… including the one behind my neighborhood in the Haskell Canyon Open Space. 🙂
