When I was about to snap the high jumper in this image, I could see the athletes entering the shot from the left. I hoped the jumper wouldn’t start his approach until they were far enough along to be out of the shot, but they weren’t. I was a little pissed in the moment. Then, I edited the photo, and I was pleasantly surprised. That suspended instant, where his body arcs over the bar, conveys tension and elegance. And the high jumper is sharp, drawing your eye directly to him. Meanwhile, the people in the foreground give the photo a sense of depth, almost framing the jumper and contrasting his focused motion with their casual presence in the image. It works. I’m no longer pissed.
