I spent 30 minutes a few weeks ago watching pelicans hunt in Ventura, CA. There were dozens of pelicans in the water at Surfers Point at Seaside Park. They would rise and hover over their prey, sometimes solo, but most often in groups of 4 to 8. Then, in an instant, they’d strike. It was not rare for them to strike in pairs, for some reason. And it was harder to capture than I imagined, given the volume of pelicans in the water. Unlike track and field athletes, I couldn’t predict their next move. Neither could the fish they were stalking.
