The birds I normally shoot between races at a track meet in Southern California are hawks or seagulls, but not “flycatchers.” But at this year’s Arcadia Invitational, a couple of different members of the Tyrant Flycatcher family showed up. The bird pictured above is a Western Kingbird, and I believe the one below is a Say’s Phoebe. According to my Google search, both feed on insects in midair, but Say’s Phoebes are frequently seen hovering low over open ground, whereas Western Flycatchers typically hunt in forested, shaded areas.
