Editing a sunset shot at the Grant Street Pier in Vancouver, WA, I noticed something odd in the crop. Three strangers stood together, each pressing a single finger to their temple in identical unison. That wasn’t the photo I was taking. The photo I was taking was much wider than even the crop above. However, that moment passed without my noticing them. I was focused on the light.

I shared the cropped image and asked Claude for an explanation, and it confidently cycled through a few theories: yoga breathing, acupressure, blocking the sun, even holding down sunglasses against a non-existent wind. However, each time I corrected a factual error, like the sun was behind them or there was no wind. The AI simply apologized and reloaded with a new, equally confident, but totally incorrect theory.

The AI’s persistence was more telling than any right answer might have been. Ultimately, like any brain seeking some sense of order, it prioritized a tidy explanation over being right. Even after seeing the wider shot, which showed others in the group not participating, it eventually landed on an alternate “group meditation” theory with an amazing level of confidence. However, it was still totally wrong.

Ultimately, I don’t know what they were doing. I would have had to notice in the moment and ask them. That’s the only way to get to the truth. Perhaps it was just simple temple-touch meditation. 

Years of taking photos have taught me that most moments don’t come with a clear explanation. Sometimes, three strangers just move in harmony for reasons that will never surface.

And a photo doesn’t need to resolve into a tidy explanation to be good.
