In her book The Extinction of Experience: Being Human in a Disembodied World, Christin Rosen pinpoints the decline of the expression “you had to be there.” As evidenced by Google stats, it was a common expression up until 2012, the year iPhone usage exploded, and social media use followed suit. We no longer “had to be there.” In this case, you did.

The photos show the sunset in Malibu, but the sunset was a minor player last night. The real stars were the people and the conversations that took place between the twelve people in attendance at one of Drew Meyer’s GEM dinners. Spencer Rascoff hosted this one at his Pacaso home in Malibu, and the evening was filled with great food, great conversation, and real people sharing openly. It was filled with embodied experiences. We all need more of them.
