Mourning Cloak Caterpillars

These are the caterpillars currently gracing our home. They are Mourning Cloak caterpillars (Nymphalis antiopa), also known as the “spiny elm caterpillar“. Their spiky, black bodies are adorned with tiny white speckles and a row of eight distinct red or orange spots down their backs. While they don’t sting, their spines can cause skin irritation or a stinging sensation if handled, so it is best to observe them without touching.

It takes 3 to 5 weeks for them to fully transform into a butterfly. Since we close on the sale of our house in 11 days, someone else will get to enjoy them as butterflies.

    1. I would be quite happy to leave them behind, from your description. Get some gentle caterpillars instead. They do catch one’s eye though.
