We stumbled on Wahkeena Falls by accident. It was not our initial destination. We were spending the day with Isaiah and on our way to see Multnomah Falls. However, we got off at the “wrong” exit. It was my fault. I told Rocky to get off an exit too soon. And it was a glorious mistake. It allowed us to spend more time on the Historic Columbia River Highway, which frankly just feels like a well-maintained country road. I had seen maps showing Wahkeena Falls, but I focused on Multnomah and did not notice how near they were to each other.
Wahkeena Falls is a breathtaking 242-foot multi-tiered cascading waterfall nestled in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area in Oregon. It’s just a short hike from the iconic, tourist-filled, 620-foot-tall Multnomah Falls. Compared with Multnomah, Wahkeena Falls is more appealing to me. It is now my preferred waterfall so far in Oregon. The ability to climb up a rock path next to the falls and experience its beauty up close is what sealed the deal. We’ll be visiting this one a lot.
