Once in a while, I like to challenge myself with a creative constraint. Last Saturday, my creative constraint was to shoot wide open with my 85mm f/1.4 lens. This setup itself imposes the creative constraint. An f/1.4 aperture lets in a lot of light and yields a very blurry background with an extremely narrow plane of focus.
This isn’t the first time I’ve challenged myself to shoot wide open. I did it once before on a weekend trip to Paso Robles. Truth is, the lens has been sitting on a shelf for far too long. And I don’t really understand why. Every time I shoot with it, I love the results. Saturday, I shot a few photos around the house, then brought it with me as we roamed the Vancouver Farmers Market and Main Street. I enjoyed it. Here are a few of the images.

Clear and colorful
Aunt Jane, this is a lot like the long exposures. Our eyes can’t see in long exposures, and they can’t see with the kind of shallow depth of field that these bright lenses provide. So the final product is something you can’t see with the naked eye.
